The candidates

10 candidates to contest Mayor of London 1 May election

The list of nominated candidates for the Mayor of London has been announced.

Elections for the Mayor and the London Assembly will be held on 1 May.

Nominations for both elections closed at midday today (28 March), and London Elects – the Office of the Greater London Returning Officer – published the list of Mayoral candidates at 4pm.

The list of London Assembly candidates will follow shortly.

The candidates standing for the Mayor of London are:

Richard Barnbrook – British National Party

Gerard Batten – UK Independence Party

Siân Berry – Green Party

Alan Craig – Christian Peoples Alliance and Christian Party

Lindsey German – Left List

Boris Johnson – Conservative Party

Ken Livingstone – Labour Party

Winston McKenzie - Independent

Matt O’Connor – English Democrats

Brian Paddick – Liberal Democrats

The Mayor of London has the biggest personal mandate of any British politician, representing an electorate of 5.5 million. Across Europe, only the Presidents of Portugal and France are directly elected by larger electorates.

Mayoral manifestos will be available online from Monday 1 April.

Mayoral and Assembly nominations can still be withdrawn by candidates or their parties before midday on Wednesday 2 April.

Notes to Editors:

2. The Mayor of London is elected using the Supplementary Vote System.  The London Assembly is elected using the Additional Member System, where 14 Members represent constituencies, and 11 are London-wide Members.  Further information about these voting systems can be found at: http://www.londonelects.org.uk/pdf/FS6-How%20the%20votes%20work.pdf

3. On Thursday 1 May, London’s 5.5 million voters will receive three ballot papers. One for the Mayor, on which they will have two votes, a first and a second choice, one to vote for a local Constituency Assembly Member and one to vote for a London-wide Assembly Member.

4. A multi-media campaign has been launched by London Elects with the Electoral Commission to ensure Londoners are aware of the elections, registering to vote and how to vote.

5. Before 1 May a Mayoral address booklet will be sent to every registered voter, listing all of the candidates standing including manifestos from the Mayoral candidates and detailed information on how to vote.
