Design agency appointed

Creativity is crucial in engaging voters

Creativity and experience were factors in appointing design agency Sherry to work with London Elects to engage and inform Londoners about next year’s Mayor and London Assembly elections.

London Elects is the independent body responsible for publicising the elections on 1 May 2008. Its role is to create awareness and understanding of the voting process and encourage action.

Sherry will produce all of London Elects’ printed materials. These will include a booklet of Mayoral manifestos sent to all 5.3million voters, the London Elects monthly newsletter, all training materials and any other publications needed in the campaign.

Sherry showed enormous creativity and understanding in their pitch. They also have experience designing an effective voter registration campaign for The Electoral Commission and worked on some elements of the Mayor and London Assembly elections in 2004.

The publications will be integral elements in London Elects’ marketing and PR campaign – which will be the official, politically neutral source of information for the public, political parties, candidates, media and other election stakeholders.

Key objectives for all the marketing materials include:

  • providing clear and politically impartial information about the election process
  • motivating people to be involved
  • encouraging people to register to vote
  • ensuring that they know when and how to vote

As well as creativity, inclusivity and accessibility are also essential factors in the design. London has the most diverse population in the UK and the creative work and layout will need to be clear to connect with people from all ages and backgrounds. Information will also need to be available in several different languages.

Anthony Mayer, the Greater London Returning Officer, said: “Sherry showed a huge amount of creativity in their proposals and have a clear understanding of the challenges we face. I am confident they will produce imaginative and yet accessible materials for our diverse audience.”

Alan Sherry, Managing Director of Sherry, said: “The Mayoral and Assembly Elections are vitally important to all Londoners and we are truly excited at the prospect of working on the 2008 campaign with the London Elects team. Through our work with the Electoral Commission we have gained extensive knowledge in devising communications materials that explain the democratic process and encourage voter participation. Our aim is to use that experience to capture the Londoner’s imagination whilst promoting and informing.”
