Stand for London-wide list

The London-wide Assembly Member contest helps to make sure the make up of the London Assembly reflects how people have voted throughout London.

Nominations open on 18 March 2008 and are managed by London Elects, on behalf of the Greater London Returning Officer (GLRO). Nomination packs are available now - contact London Elects for a pack.

Political parties

Political parties can put forward a list of up to 25 names of candidates to stand in the London-wide Assembly Member contest. Party list nomination forms are available from the Greater London Returning Officer (GLRO) through London Elects. The party list should be completed by the party's nominating officer and returned to the GLRO by 12pm on 28 March 2008.

Each candidate on the party list must have a signed and witnessed 'Consent to Nomination' form - these should accompany the party list.

Any political parties that want to use the party's emblem on the ballot paper must submit a formal request, signed by the party nominations officer.

Independent candidates

You don't have to be part of a political party to stand for election as London-wide Assembly Members. Independent candidates can get separate nomination and 'consent to nomination' forms from the GLRO. These must be returned by the nomination deadline - 12pm on 28 March 2008.

Candidates who are not standing for a registered political party can only use the description ‘Independent’ or have no description on the London-wide ballot paper.

Deposit

Nomination forms must be accompanied by a deposit of £5,000, regardless of how many names are on the form. This is returned if the party or independent candidate receives more than 2.5% of the total votes across London in the London-wide Assembly election.
